Reise nach Apulien, per Eisenbahn von Zürich nach Foggia

Klar und sparsam sind die Farben, ohne verschwänderische Buntheit und auf das Allernotwendigste beschränkt. Das Blau des Meeres, das silberne Graugrün der Vegetation, das Rotbraun der Erde, ein mattes Gelb, ein sanftes Rosa bis zu einem wüstenfarbenen Ockerbraun – Tönungen des Kalksteins.

Klar ist auch das Licht, dem nur wenige Farben wiederstehen, und in kräftigem Licht-Schatten-Spiel treten die Umrisse um so schärfer, die Volumen um so deutlicher hervor.

Journey to Apulia, by train from Zurich to Foggia.

The colours are clear and restrained, without wasteful brightness, limited to the bare essentials: the blue of the sea, the silvery grey-green of the vegetation, the reddish brown of the earth, a muted yellow, a gentle pink shading into a desert-coloured ochre — tones of limestone.

The light, too, is clear — a light to which few colours can resist. In its sharp play of light and shadow, outlines stand out more distinctly, volumes become more precise.
